Bubbles in the wind

I love the idea of spending your Saturdays exploring places you've never been before. When you come across something that makes you smile, it is even more delightful sharing that moment with someone you love. Just like the moment I saw these bubbles being blown away by the wind..

Paper Dress Vintage

Paper Dress Vintage is a store I stumbled across on one of my night adventures in London. I heard that a friend of mine was playing with The Night Jars of a shop front window in a vintage store and so I headed to Paper Dress Vintage and I was a very very happy bunny! Not only was it a store filled with vintage delights but also I got to watch one fantastic band. After the band played I turned around and headed straight for the racks to find myself a hidden gem. It is a store filled with delights dating from the 1900 - 80's and it helps that all racks are labeled with different eras which makes shopping far less complicated and much easier.

Paper Dress Vintage was opened by Hannah Turner Voakes in September 2007 and has since established itself as a ‘must-go’ on the East London Vintage scene. I must mention here that whenever you pop into Paper Dress Vintage, you will always find Hannah dressed in a dazzling dress and a wonderful smile that puts you even in a better mood to shop.

Hannah named the boutique after a fad from the 60’s – the paper dress.
In 1966, Scott Paper Company invented the paper dress, intended as a marketing tool. For one dollar, women could buy the dress and also receive coupons for Scott paper products. The paper dress wasn’t an invention meant to be taken seriously, but women surprised the company by ordering half a million of these dresses in under a year. People were demanding more convenience and instant gratification. What was more instantly gratifying than a dress you could hem yourself with only a pair of scissors, or a dress that could simply be thrown out if it got dirty?
As the trend took off, companies began to experiment with style and fabric, adding other materials to the paper to make a sturdier garment that could even be washed. Mars Manufacturing Company invented a wide range of paper dresses, from a basic A-line style, to a paper evening dress, to a full paper wedding gown, all for under $20. Other companies followed suit, inventing such things as paper slippers, paper bell-bottom suits and waterproofed paper raincoats and bikinis. Even Andy Warhol got in on the trend, creating a design based on his famous Campbell’s soup can print.

PhotobucketThis is one of the wonderful dresses I bought on the night and I can easily say it is a dress that I always wear as it flows so beautifully and it is probably the only piece I have in my wardrobe that has red in it.

You can also have a little pitstop while shopping and have a good cup of coffee (which I find hard to find in London town) or a tea. They also make wonderful brownies and oh have I mentioned for all you cupcakes fans, Paper Dress Vintage also has cupcake decoration events AHHHHMAZING!

I am not a very big fan of revamping vintage designs or creating vintage pieces with a modern twist for the simple reason of its originality. I like the idea of wearing a garment with history, a story to tell. The idea of reproducing a piece feels like somehow memories are being slashed away from the garment. In saying that, the wonderful Hannah  and her very creative team worked closely together to create the Paper Collection using exclusive vintage fabrics adorned with vintage trimmings, all sourced from extensive treasure hunts and created this collection using hand crafted, traditional techniques. If you would like to see their collection, I recommend that you visit Paper Dress's site as I have found it to be one of the easiest fashion based sites to navigate. I sometimes find fashion labels create websites that are far too complicated and make the whole idea of online shopping and fashion surfing all too unbearable and so a good website is definitely something to boast about!

Field Day 2011

The Field day extravaganza began with a little unexpected surprise when I was standing and thought that I had spotted Jose Gonzalez. I took a few snaps of him and went to debate the issue with friends and they assured me that Jose Gonzalez had no need to be at Field Day 2011. The first time I took photos for him was at Falls Festival 2007 Lorne, Australia and had spotted his along polished nails which in no way shape or form could take my mind away from his incredible voice and how humble he was on stage. Moving on an hour or two yesterday and we crossed paths again this time with me yet again spotting those polished nails. As it turns out he had preformed earlier with his band Junip and I have spent the whole morning reading and listening to their music and can honestly say I am so gutted that I completely missed them.

Junip the three piece of sheer genius, is the collaboration and dedication of Elias Araya (drums), José González (vocals & guitar) - naturally and Tobias Winterkorn (organ & synth). It seems that Junip has always been a dream for the band members with life somehow playing around and mucking about with them, not to mention the success of González's album Veneer that most held the band back in pursuing this dream any earlier.  I am in no way a music expert and there is so much that I have yet to learn and know about in music but I do know that Fields is one album to listen to and I am quite frustrated that I only discovered it like ummm 24 hours ago!

The first time I saw SBTRKT was this year at Coachella Festival and I must say he smashed it both times! But the first time I saw him it was about 32 degrees, sunny, 2 PM in a tent where about 100 people were raving and jumping about to his amazing beats. I must say I have been listening to his new album SBTRKT religiously and I love every tune. Yesterday was a completely different story, with thousands of people anticipating his music squeezing in a tent while others that couldn't fit in were standing outside of the tent hoping it doesn't bucket down with rain. Half way through his set it started to rain, people from outside of the tent began to push in, we started to get pretty squashed till ever so slowly my feet began to move upwards and rise and I pretty much was being moved by the crowds side ways, frontwards, backwards while the whole time I was looking at my friends hoping this was not really happening! Then I got pulled and tugged back to base and loved every single minute of his set.

I was at home a few months ago listening to my favourite radio show BPM breakfast show on NTS radio and they played an amazing song by Omar Souleyman. It was quite a surreal moment for me being at a festival in London listening to music in Arabic where I can understand every single word. It is not the kind of music the majority of youngsters listen to in the Arabic world and his work is very traditional Middle Eastern sung in Arabic and Kurdish but somehow this Syrian musician has been able to steel the hearts of many music fans around the world and some pay the thanks to American label Sublime Frequencies for introducing him to us.

I am not sure if it is some sort of trend that is surfacing and I am totally unaware that it's happening but my idea of a festival is a place where you can enjoy music, meet people, dance, jump around and be very silly. I saw many girls (including a few celebrities) wearing high heels at Coachella Festival 2001 and I was taken back a bit. That happened again at Field Day 2011 with high heels at full swing from massive wedges to stilettos, to chunky heels and it got me thinking, am I missing something or is it time for us to move forward and pull out heels for stomping? Might stick for a very long time to my way of flats for a good time at a festival.

A Little of What You Fancy...

Photobucket
A little of what you fancy is a small but buzzing restaurant in the heart of Dalston on Kingsland Rd. I paid them a little visit  on a Sunday and the most enjoyable part of the shoot was watching the whole team prepare and get all the local ingredients ready for service. Communication was by the plentiful , chit chat, laughs, coffee being made for all those there and most importantly the atmosphere was very relaxed and chilled. Laurence and Elaine have built wonderful relationships along the years with local growers and suppliers where they source most of their ingredients-with some even coming from neighbourhood gardens.

As I was standing watching all the preparation and cooking, Elaine asked if I liked smoked salmon, with me replying with a long 'ummmmm LOVE, smoked salmon.' She then proceeded to pull out an incredible piece of smoked salmon from the fridge, cut a few pieces into thin slices, squeeze some lemon, sprinkle some salt and cracked pepper and hand it over to me saying: 'Here, try this.' I can honestly say it was probably one of the best smoked salmon I have ever had, so tender yet firm, the smokiness of the salmon was just perfect and it tasted so fresh. Elaine explained that the salmon is by a local provider that smokes his salmon locally and has been in the business for so many years. It made me wonder how someone could have so much passion in what they did that they were able to produce something so magnificent and tasty every single time for so many years.

When I sat down to eat this to DIE FOR frittata I was amazed that Elaine still had time to come out of the kitchen and say hello to the diners. She walked about and asked people how the food was and there were so many clients that had clearly been there before as they stood up said hello and hugged her. I absolutely loved it as I felt that the whole experience was far more personable and that all the dishes were made with tons of love and from the heart.

The servings are VERY generous and when I say generous, I truly mean it... combined with fresh, locally produced and sourced ingredients, then you've got yourself one fantastic meal in the heart of Hackney. A large part of me feels that my photographs don't give the food justice! I wish I could imbed some sort of button where you can press it and smell the wonderful aromas of all the dishes being served.

Prices are extremely reasonable, with large portions and fantastic atmosphere, it's always nice to treat yourself and someone you care about!

The kitchen is small and they are chefs prepping, waiters walking in to clear, and clean with barely space to move but it all flowed in such harmony. I had a great laugh when Elaine turned around and said: 'This is where it all happens, it's small but it works...as I like to call it, it's organised chaos.' I can easily say it was very organised with a kitchen that size I was amazed how they could keep their cool. I was getting stressed just watching the them cook, plate up and get all dishes out to customers with utter perfection.
